Freshly ground coffee can make a noticeable difference. But that doesn’t mean pre-ground coffee can’t make a great cup.
Grinding coffee dramatically increases its exposed surface area. Once ground, coffee loses volatile aromatic compounds more quickly and has greater exposure to oxygen. Grinding just before brewing helps preserve more of the aromas and flavors that contribute to a fresh, expressive cup.
Whole bean coffee also gives you more control. You can adjust the grind size to suit your brewing method and make small changes as you dial in your cup.
But convenience matters too. Quality coffee that’s ground appropriately for your brewing method and stored properly can still produce an enjoyable cup. If you choose pre-ground coffee, keep the package tightly sealed and store it in a cool, dry place away from heat, moisture and direct light.
BREW BETTER: For maximum freshness and control, grind whole beans just before brewing. If you prefer pre-ground coffee, choose the right grind for your brewing method and store it carefully.
Great coffee isn’t about following rules. It’s about understanding what makes your cup better. ☕
